Course Description

Drone Operations and Safety Management – Level 1 (Basic) is an introductory professional development course designed to equip participants with the foundational knowledge and practical competencies required for the safe, legal and effective operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The course is suitable for individuals seeking to begin professional practice in UAV operations, with no prior UAV experience required. Participants will explore UAV regulations, privacy and ethical considerations, aircraft components, basic aerodynamics, flight planning, operational risk management, remote pilot responsibilities and flight-team coordination. The course also introduces aerial photography and videography for operational applications. Through interactive instruction, practical workshops and supervised flight exercises, participants will apply recognised procedures and demonstrate foundational flight proficiency aligned with NIST Level One flight exercise standards.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Explain the legal, regulatory, ethical and professional requirements governing UAV operations.

  • Identify UAV classifications, major components, basic robotics systems and aircraft performance considerations.
  • Apply principles of flight planning, aeronautical decision-making, risk assessment and safe remote pilot operations.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork within a UAV flight team during mission planning and execution.
  • Apply basic aerial photography, videography and flight techniques, including recognised foundational flight exercises.
